Mob targets cops after MP mishap; head constable suspended

Dewas, MP, Nov 11 (UNI) A head constable was suspended after a mob torched the office of a sub-divisional officer (police), besides damaging vehicles and a police station after a returning patrol vehicle hit-and killed one person and injured another in this district's Bagli today.

''Home Guard Constable Ramsingh, who was at the wheel of the vehicle carrying Head Constable Mangilal, was arrested,'' said Ujjain Range Inspector-General M P Dwivedi.

Police exercised mild force to bring the situation under control by evening. The collector and superintendent of police rushed to Bagli -- 65 km from here -- and an additional force was stationed.

''The mob ransacked the police station and some tried to assault personnel -- while the accident report was being filed -- overturned and torched a vehicle parked in the premises. Some parked two-wheelers were also engulfed by the fire,'' Mr Dwivedi said.

The vehicle had crushed two people on a motorbike. The deceased was identified as Kalu Dabi (17) while Jeetendra Singh alias Himmat Singh was hospitalised. The SDO(P) office was later ransacked, torched and the blaze engulfed some two-wheelers.

''The administration succeeded in pacifying people who were blocking a road using the body,'' Mr Dwivedi said while adding that no arrest was executed until late evening. The accused are likely to be identified and a case registered by tonight.
