Raipur, Nov 11 (UNI) Police personnel have been thrashed and a jeep torched by locals at nearby Rakhi village where the team went for a raid on illicit liquor.
Following information of sale of such liquor, two jeeploads of personnel -- led by Station House Officer (SHO) Savita Das -- reached Rakhi yesterday afternoon. A search at the Deemar family's address drew a blank except for two cans of diesel.
When the team began taking away Gendu Deemar, in a jeep allegedly provided by a liquor contractor, the villagers became agitated and began pelting stones at the police who resorted to mild force after which the locals thrashed the personnel though the SHO managed to get away. The jeep was torched.
An additional force was rushed to Rakhi and City Superintendent of Police (CSP) G S Bambra pacified the villagers. No arrest was executed.
''The CSP has been told to probe the incident. It will be found out whether police carelessness or vengeance was behind the action.
The villagers allege that the jeep was provided by the contractor,'' Raipur's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) B S Marawi told UNI.
Admitting that several complaints were earlier received against the SHO, the SSP added that she was transferred from the Mandir Hasaud Police Station but had secured a High Court stay.
