Patiala, November 10 (UNI) Garima Chowdhary of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) wing of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at the NIS here, became the first Indian woman judoka to win a gold medal in the 8th Junior Asian Judo Championship (Under-20) held at Hyderabad on November 7 and 8.
She defeated the fancied Japanese judoka in the final of the 63 Kg weight category, after beating another top judoka from Korea in the semi-final.
''It is a moment of pride for India,'' said her coach Jeevan Sharma, a former national coach.
Besides Garima Chowdhary, Kalpana Devi (52 Kg) and Yaima Singh (81 Kg), both from CoE, Patiala, also won silver and bronze medals respectively in the said Championship in which 21 countries participated.
The winning spree continued for India as Ajay Kumar of Ludhiana (Punjab) also hogged the limelight by winning a gold medal in the inaugural Asian Youth Judo Championship (Under-15) held at Hyderabad a day before the Asian Judo Championship.
