Kozhikode, Nov 9 (UNI) Senior NCP leader Cyriac John today resigned from the party in protest against its ''failure'' to take action against party leader K Karunakaran for making overtures to return to the Congress.

Talking to newspersons here, he alleged that party president Sharad Pawar had virtually ''failed'' to initiate action against Mr Karunakaran, who was making serious efforts to rejoin the Congress.

Mr John said his letter, tendering resignation from the Working Committee and primary membership of the party, had been despatched to Mr Pawar and state unit President K Muraleedharan as well.

Stating that many leaders of the party had expressed their resentment over the ''inaction'', he said a meeting of the like-minded people would be convened soon to decide on the future course of action.

A former President of the party in the state, Mr John had reliquished the post to facilitate Mr Muraleedharan to take over as the NCP chief after the merger of Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) with the NCP last year.

A four-time MLA, Mr John was also a Minister in the 1982 Karunakaran Cabinet in the state.
