Nagpur, Nov 9 (UNI) Seven people, including six of a family, were killed when the auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling, collided head-on with a truck in Bhandara district today.
The mishap occurred when the auto-rickshaw, on its way to Chhattisgarh, slammed into the oncoming truck near village Jambhli, about 40 kilometres from Bhandara, early this morning, police said.
Those killed have been identified as Lala Chaitram Patel (45), Rajmani Lala Patel (40), Anita Lala Patel (17), Sangita Lala Patel (9), Govind Lala Patel (15) and Gopi Lala Patel (8). A seventh victim, a man aged about 50, has not been identified yet.
Chaitram Patel worked as a labourer in Nagpur, and was on his way with his family to Chilati at Kawardha district in neighbouring Chhattisgarh for Diwali, police said. They were travelling in their own auto-rickshaw as they were unable to board a bus in Nagpur last night, police said.
The family was carrying a parrot in a bird cage which survived the accident.
The driver of the truck fled from the spot after the accident, the police added.
