Farmers urged to take up traditional crops in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Nov 7 (UNI) Orissa Agriculture Minister Surendranath Naik today urged the agricultural scientists and farmers to focus more on the farming of traditional crops to increase agriculture production in the state.

Addressing the agricultural scientists on the concluding day of the two day seminar on'' Road map for Agricultural Development in Orissa'' organised by the Orissa Agriculture University Teachers' Association here Mr Naik said the efforts to take up crop alien to the farmers had disaster result in the past.

The Minister said the farmers should take up production of crop like groundnut,rice which could give them better return in a short duration.

Mr Naik said the production in Orissa had suffered due to improper distribution of water,inadequate budgetary provision, utilisation of fund meant for agriculture for other purposes by the farmers, lack of proper marketing system and due to repeated natural disasters.

He expressed concern over the import of huge quantity of potato, fish, cereals and ground nut seeds from other states to meet the requirement of the state and appealed to the scientists to develop technology and help it reach the farmers so that the state could meet its minimum basic requirements in food and agriculture sector.

Mr Naik assured the delegates to discuss the recommendations of agricultural scientists during the last two days with the state Agriculture Production Commissioner, Chief Secretary and Vice- Chancellor of Orissa University of Technology and ensure that it would reach the farmers and increase agriculture production in the state.
