Gandhinagar, Nov 8 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has censured Gujarat Tribal Development Minister Prabhatsinh Chauhan, for violating the provisions of the model code of conduct.
The Commission has directed Mr Chauhan to deposit the amount spent on using a government vehicle, including POL charges in the government treasury, and ordered that a copy of the challan/receipt should be furnished to the Commission by November 10.
The Commission censured the Minister on complaints that he had visited Halol, his native place Mehlol, taluka Godhra, district Panchmahal on October 14 in his official vehicle that was driven by his official driver. The Minister returned the next day and used the same official vehicle to travel back to Gandhinagar and also stopped in between at a hotel near Godhra Circuit House to meet the party workers from his Constituency.
The Commission had issued a notice and also considered the submission made by Mr Chauhan. But the EC was not convinced with his written submission.
The code of conduct provides that the party in power whether at the Centre or in the state concerned, shall ensure that no cause is given for any complaint that it has used its official position for the purpose of its election campaign and in particular, government transport including official aircraft, vehicles, machinery and personnel shall not be used for furtherance of the interest of the party in power.
