TN rain incidents: Toll rises to 36

Chennai, Nov 6: Four more people died in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu since last night, even as several areas of the State received good rain under the influence of Northeast monsoon.

Till last week, 32 people were killed in rain-related incidents and with the death of four more, the toll rose to 36 today.

Reports received at the police headquarters here said a father and his daughter were killed when they were struck by lightning at Melapalai village in Kanniyakumari district late last night.

The deceased were identified as Vijayankutty (55) and his daughter Sriviyda (28).

In another incident, a 35-year-old man was struck dead by lightining while working in a paddy field at Annaian village in Tirunelveli district this morning.

At Pattukottai in Thanjavur district a youth, Prakash (20) died in a wall collapse at Keezhali village. His mother Mariammal (42) sustained injuries and admitted to the hospital.

They were sleeping in their house, when the mud walls, which were soaked by heavy rains, caved and fell on them at 0430 hrs today.

Meanwhile, reports received here said the monsoon had become vigorous in several parts of the State.
