Puducherry, Nov 6 (UNI) The local administration department would launch a massive garbage cleaning drive by engaging volunteers of the Self-Help Groups here, Minister for Local Administration Malladi Krishna Rao said today.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Rao said the cleaning drive would be launched with the government providing vehicles and deploying ten members in each panchayat.
The government would spent Rs 5.2 crore for the scheme annually, he said adding Puducherry and the Ozhukarai municipalities together were generating 350 tonnes of garbage every day, which was being converted into compost manure at an oxidation plant near here.
Meanwhile, the department had sought a grant of Rs 50 crore from the Jawaharlal Nehru Rural and Urban Mission for implementing the integrated solid waste management programme in the Union Territory.
He said the three-member committee headed by P R Ramanathan for identifying the activities for panchayats and sharing of powers with them today presented its report to him which would be sent to the cabinet for approval.
Mr Rao, who is also incharge of Tourism said tourist guards to guide tourists here would be appointed in a fortnight.
