Amritsar, Nov 6 (UNI) Jalandhar claimed the overall trophy by securing 27 points in the Punjab State Games for Women, organised by the Punjab Sports Department at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
There was a close race for the runners-up trophy and Ropar (18) just got the better of Amritsar (17 points) to finish second.
Kapurthala prevailed over hosts Amritsar 2-1 in the hockey final. Jalandhar defeated Tarn Taran 3-0 in a one-sided match to obtain third position.
The basketball trophy went to Jalandhar who defeated Amritsar by 40-17. Kapurthala and Gurdaspur got third and fourth positions, respectively.
Internationals Nirmal Singh, Baldev Singh, Narinder Singh (athletics), Kewal Krishan, Rajinder Prasad (gymnastics), Col Harcharan Singh, Balbir Singh Randhawa, Surinder Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Ajinder Pal Singh Malhi, Ajit Pal Singh, Nirmal Singh Nimma, Maninder Singh, Nirmal Kumari (hockey), Rabneet Singh, Charanjit Singh (swimming), Hardip singh (kabaddi), Satish Kumar (volleyball), Narinder Singh, Harjinder Singh (judo), Loverishi and Vikas Kumar (softball) were also felicitated on this occasion.
Member of Parliament Raj Mohinder Singh Majitha was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. He also announced a grant of Rs one lakh to the Punjab Sports Department for purchase of sports goods.
Mr Majitha announced that the medal winners of the Olympics, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games will receive handsome cash prizes from the state government. He also promised that the state Government would provide jobs to outstanding sportspersons in Boards and Corporations.
Speaking on the occasion, Punjab sports director Pargat Singh said that the state teams for the coming National Women Games to be held at Thane from December 24 to 27 have been selected during the Games. The selected players would attend coaching camps for training before their respective nationals meet, he added.
