UP inflicts innings defeat on hosts Orissa

Cuttack, Nov 5 (UNI) A team packed with several internationals, star studded Uttar Pradesh registered an innings victory against hosts Orissa in their Ranji trophy elite-B Group match played here today The visitors won by an innings and 10 runs on the third day of the four-day match.

Needing 232 runs in their second innings to force up to bat again, Orissa's second innings ended with just 222 runs on the board after tea on the third-day's play.

Earlier in the morning, UP began at an overnight score of 410 for seven and added only 38 runs to lose the remaining three wickets in only an hours play.

Piyush Chawla added only 10 runs to his unbeaten score of 59 to become the first victim of speedster Pritamjit Das. Das then removed the remaining two wickets to return an impressive match figure of five for 63 in 21 overs.

Orissa's second innings suffered an early blow when it lost three quick wickets for only 15 runs. Veteran Debasis Mohanty appeared in a new role as opener with S S Das as regular opener Niranjan Behera was indisposed due to injury. Behera did not bat in the second innings.

After the departute of Mohanty, Das and comeback man R R Parida, Orissa was staring at imminent defeat but wicket keeper Haldhar Das (71) middle order batsman P Jayachandra (50) and bowler Sukant Khatua (35) delayed the UP celebrations till 45 minutes after tea.

For UP, the debutant S Tyagi, who claimed six wickets in the first innings, took four second innings wickets to finish the match with 10 giving away 92 runs.

Brief Score: Orissa first innings-216 all out UP first innings-448 all out ( S Raina 203, P Chawala 69) P Das 5 for 63 S Khatua 3 for 109) Orissa second innings-222 for 9 (Haladhar Das 71, P Jayachandra 50 S Khatua 35.
