Lucknow, Nov 5 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Council Chairman Chaudhary Sukhram Singh Yadav today directed the Mayawati government to get parts of Dalit icon E V Ramaswamy Naicker Periyar's 'Sachchi Ramayana' edited, which were hurting the religious sentiments of the people.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of the UP Council, Dr Nepal Singh, Dr Shima Rizvi, Prof Ramji Singh, Shyam Nandan Singh, Jai Prakash Chaturvedi, Raj Kumar Tyagi and others raked up the issue of 'Sachchi Ramayana' and demanded from Mr Yadav to adjourn proceedings of the House and have a discussion.
Supporting the motion, BJP members demanded from the state government to ban the printing/sale of the controversial book as it was spreading hatred in the society and accused Chief Minister Mayawati of publicising it.
Terming the sale of 'Sachchi Ramayana' in UP as 'unfortunate', they added ''it has hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus. No one has a right to hurt the faith of others.'' Leader of the teachers' group Om Prakash Sharma said ''Periyar's book is spreading the poison of hatred in the society, which is a danger to unity. Whatever has been said about Lord Ram and Sita was intolerable and hurt the religious sentiments of crores of Hindus across India.'' He added ''the state government should not work towards spreading hatred among people in the name of creating an equity based society.
Lord Ram and Krishna are icons of the society. The CM should not encourage the publicity of the book.'' Principal Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) member and leader of Opposition Ahmad Hassan noted the issue was quite grave. ''Using indignified language about Lord Ram was not good. Muslims across the globe opposed the Prophet Mohammad cartoons by a Sweeden based cartoonist. There is an urget need to ban the controversial book'' he added.
