Bhubaneswar, Nov 3 (UNI) The Orissa state Sentence Review Board (SRB) today recommended release of 49 prisoners serving life imprisonment in various jails of the state for their early release.
Home Secretary T K Mishra said the prisoners would be released on January 26 after the state Governor gave his assent.
All the 49 cases would be sent to the law department, which would submit the recommendations to the Governor for his approval after reviewing the cases, he said.
Mr Mishra said IG Prison had sent 94 cases for consideration of the board for their early release.
The board recommended the 49 cases out of 94 considering their conduct inside the jail, their socio-economic background and the condition under which the crime was committed.
The Home Secretary said the cases of rest 45 prisoners would be considered and the board would recommend for their release in phases if they satisfied all the criteria.
He said while 28 out of the 49 prisoners were tribals, eight belonged to scheduled castes and most of them were convicted for murder and had already served 14 years of imprisonment.
