Meerut, UP, Nov 3 (UNI) Former chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today tried to corner Election Commission for not announcing dates of the Ballia Lok Sabha bypoll, necessitated following the demise of former prime minister Chandrashekhar.
Addressing partymen at the end of three-day state convention here at the Victoria Park, Mr Yadav wondered that even after flood waters have receded, the EC was not announcing fresh dates for the bypoll.
Earlier, the EC had announced August 29 as the date for the bypoll, but had postponed the elections following massive floods in East UP.
EC had been holding several elections and byelections since then, but it has not announced fresh dates for Ballia, he wondered.
He said a delegation of SP leaders would soon meet the EC officials to demand early bypoll. Late Chandrashekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar was present on the dias when Mr Yadav asked party workers to ensure his landslide win. He should win by a margin of at least 2 lakh votes.'' he said.
Neeraj Shekhar had recently joined the SP to conest the bypoll. After the demise of Mr CH andrashekhar on July 8 llast, Neeraj's sibling Pankaj too had expressed willingness to contest the bypoll but had backed off to avoid a political clash between brothers.
Mr Yadav congratulated his son Akhilesh and other party leaders for the victory of SP candidate in the Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh) assembly bypoll. When you can win in a BJP-ruled state, then why cannot repeat the feat in UP. he said.
