Maharashtra on top of Khadiwale's century

Chennai, Nov 3 (UNI) A painstaking century by opener H H Khadiwale (126, 263 balls, 12x4) and a strokeful unbeaten half century by Y V Takawale (52 not out) helped Maharashtra score 261 for 4 at close on the opening day of Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match against Tamil Nadu here today.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, the visitors made slow progress in the first two sessions, before scoring at nearly four runs an over in the final session to finish the day at 261 for four.

Khadiwale, after negotiating the pace bowlers in the initial stages, took time to settle down and placed some pleasing shots on both sides of the wicket to complete his century, before his dismissal after the second new ball was taken, ended the day's action at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.

Anchoring the innings from one end, Khadiwale was involved in three useful partnerships, as Tamil Nadu bowlers struggled for wickets.

First he added 68 for the opening wikcet in 22.3 overs with V R Bhilare (26, 60 balls, 3x4) and then added another 74 for the second in 33.5 overs with K M Jadhav (35, 121 balls, 3x4).

The exit of skipper Y Venugopala Rao (eight) reduced the visitors to 155 for three in 60.1 overs. However, Khadiwale found an able partner Y V Takawale (52 batting, 68 balls, 8x4, 1x6) and added 106 runs for the fourth wicket, before the opener departed at the fag end of the day.

Off spinner R Ashwin bagged two wickets for the home team.
