Federation activists arrested for resorting to agitation
Madurai, Nov 3 (UNI) Police today arrested 40 activists of the Devendrakula Vellalar Federation for resorting to a road blockade on Madurai-Azhagar Temple road here, in protest against the removal of the statue of freedom fighter and Dalit leader Veeran Sundaralingam at Kadachanendal.
Police said the agitators were demanding the re-installation of the statue at Mandela Nagar junction, on the outskirts of the city.
A group of local people installed the statue without obtaining permission from the law enforcing authorities yesterday, prompting the police to remove it.
In the ensuing violence, 25 state-owned buses had been damaged, police added.
