Tension in Madurai over statue removal

Madurai, Nov 2 (UNI) Tension prevailed at Perungudi today on the outskirts of the city, when a mob protested against the police for removing the statue of Veeran Sundaralingam.

Police said a group of people had installed the cement statue at four road junction in Mandela Nagar without obtaining prior permission.

On information, police rushed to the spot and removed the statue.

Protesting against the police action, some miscreants pelted stones at vehicles, passing through the area.

Over 20 vehicles, including government and private, were damaged and a few passengers were injured.

Meanwhile, members of Devendrakula Vellar Federation blocked road at Anupanadi in the city to condemn the removal of the statue.

As many as 33 activists, including Federation District President Surya Dev were arrested, police added.
