A police party was despatched to arrest him but the SI managed to escape, SSP Faridkot L K Yadav, who had additional charge of Moga, told reporters here last night.

The action against SI Raman Kumar was taken after conducting an enquiry on two affidavits filed by one Ajay Kumar Bhalla and one other that Kumar, then SHO Moga, extorted a sum of Rs 1.60 lakh from Bhalla assuring them that the two would be spared from prosecution in a rape case registered with the Moga police on April 18 on the complaint of one Manpreet Kaur of Barsal village.

But even after paying bribe to Sub-inspector Raman Kumar, they were arrested and sent to jail, the complainant said.

According to the SSP, the enquiry was conducted by the DSP Baghapurna, who found the allegation correct. As a result, Raman Kumar, now SHO Badhni Kalan, was also included in the list of accused in the rape case and was also dismissed from service.

Raman Kumar is second police officer named in the rape case.

About a week ago, Inspector Amarjit Singh, SHO police station City-1, was arrested in the same case.
