Sporting Clube De Goa advances to QF beating Army XI 2-0

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) Sporting Clube De Goa scored a facile 2-0 victory over Army XI to advance into the quarter-final of the 120th Osian's Durand Cup Football tournament here today.

Olufhola Ogundare (8th), Bibiano Fernandes (61st) found the target for the Goans, while Ramachandran (92nd) pull one back for the Army in the injury time.

The match in a way settles scores for Sporting who lost to the same opponents in 2005 finals of this tournament in a tie breaker.

Sporting, who dominated the proceeding's, shot into lead eighth minute into the match, with hard working Ogundare blasting a right-footer from a Boniface Ambani spade work. From then onwards the Goan side enjoyed most of the exchanges but could not give the finishing touches.

After resumption, the introduction of former India player Bibiano lead the Goans to a numerous openings. Eighth minute into the second session, Joseph Pereira's neat left-footed placement from top left corner of the box was briliantly palmed away by goalkeeper Robi Kanta Singh.

Army also made some threatening moves early into the second half.

Ngurneilal's left-footer in front of the goal was blocked by defender.

In the 69th minute Sportings substitute Eze Ifiocha hit the crossbar after Irudaya Raag made a defensive blunder.

Two minutes later, Sporting cushion their lead with Bibiano lobbying over the out of possition goal-keeper from top of the box into the net.

With much time left into the match, Army went for an all out attack but it was Sporting who could have increase their lead have Ifiocha not miss an easy chance, shoting wide in front of the open goal after being fed by Ogundare.

Army's miss a sitter in the 85th minute with Ramachandran goal bound left-footer missing the cross-piece by inches.

Ramachandran rectified his mistake by scoring the consolation goal in the injury time but it was too late in the day. Sporting will play the quarter-final on Sunday.
