Kathmandu, Nov 2: In a major breakthrough towards resolving the political crisis in Nepal, the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has agreed with the other six political parties to proclaim the nation a republic, a major Maoists demand.
NC leaders agreed to the proposal of proclaiming the Himalayan nation a republic through Parliament but added that the move will be implemented only after the first meeting of the elected Constituent assembly polls, in an attempt to avert a possible split among parties over the issue of republic.
However Maoists insisted on immediate enforcement of the proclamation, the Kathmandu post reported.
NC leaders agreed to the Maoists demand after intense pressure from the Left allies who even threatened to come together during voting on the issue in the interim Parliament.
''There was intense discussion on the issue today. And we agreed to continue deliberations till tomorrow to try to evolve a consensus,'' the paper quoted Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal as saying.
He added the session would conclude today, notwithstanding an understanding is reached over the issue or not.
