Shillong, Nov 02 (UNI) A public hearing on the Draft Vision 2020 for the North Eastern States was held at the North Eastern Council (NEC) auditorium here today.
Official sources said the initiative for this vision document was taken by the NEC in 2005, adding that the salient points emerging from the public hearings would be duly considered for inclusion in the final vision document.
Speaking at the public hearing, NEC Secretary Falguni Raj Kumar said a region-specific planning must be made for the NE in the document, which would strive to bring about the well being of the region's people.
The aim would be to achieve peace, progress and prosperity for the people by evolving a system suitable for them.
Mr Rajkmumar said the NE was endowed with richer natural and physical resources than the other states in the country.
The NEC, being a regional planning body, was framing suitable measures to bring about the all-round development of the region.
He also said the National Institute of Rural Development, Guwahati, was currently preparing a report on steps to bring about poverty alleviation in the NE.
The hearing was attended by all sections of the society, including academicians, bureaucrats, politicians, social organisations and the media.
Aspects of improvement in infrastructure related to education, transport, agriculture and horticulture, tourism, communications, human rights indicators, industrialisation, cultural and linguistic growth were highlighted at the hearing.
