Puducherry, Nov 2: The Puducherry unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today demanded a CBI probe into the alleged smuggling of rice via Puducherry.
Talking to newspersons here, NCP State President G Sundramurthy said he had sent a fax message to party chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, enlisting all details related to the smuggling and also the detention of a goods train with 40 wagons loaded with rice and urged Mr Pawar to press for a CBI probe.
Mr Sundramurthy said the rice was meant for distribution through the Public Distribution System(PDS) in Tamil Nadu and rice worth Rs five crore was seized and wondered how 15,000 tonnes of rice reached Puducherry without the notice of the concerned authorities.
This clearly shows that the rice was being smuggled with the connivance of the rulers here, he alleged and demanded that the Chief Minister N Rangasamy make public the actions taken by his government on the issue so far.
He alleged that the Railway was losing Rs 30,000 per hour by way of rent for the wagons and there was pressure to unload the rice and leave it under the control of Puducherry Agricultural Products and Civil Supplies Corporation (PAPSCO). The rice should not be unloaded, as it would lead to malpractices, he added.
