Chandigarh, Nov 2 (UNI) Chandigarh District Magistrate R K Rao today appealed to the people to avoid bursting of crackers in the city during Diwali and other festivals.

Earlier, a complete ban was imposed on bursting of crackers and emitting of sound therefrom in the city from 2200 hrs to 0600 hrs with effect from October 29 to November 11 next.

An official spokesman said that during the festive days, there is a tendency to indulge in violent merry-making. But, it is most tragic when jubilation results in serious injuries particularly to children.

As a preventive measure, the Chandigarh Administration has not granted any fresh cracker licence this year.

The spokesman said all the citizens of City Beautiful had been requested to abide by instructions issued by the Chandigarh Administration as the ill-effect of the use of crackers not only enhances environmental and noise pollution, but also disturbs the tranquility of the city. It also has an adverse effect on human beings, birds and animals.
