Srinagar, Nov 1: Troops foiled major infiltration bid when they gunned down three heavily armed militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir today.

A defence ministry spokesman said troops guarding the border, noticed a group of militants infiltrating into this side in Machil and Keran sectors of the frontier district of Kupwara early this morning, taking the advantage of darkness.

He said when challenged and asked to surrender at a particular place on this side of the LoC, militants opened indiscriminate fire.

The fire was returned and in the fierce gun battle three militants were killed so far.

Reinforcement was rushed from nearby camps to both sides and a massive operation has been launched in the woods.

He said the exact number of infiltrators was not immediately known.

This was the first infiltration attempt by militants from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) since the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) announced three day unilateral ceasefire on the occasion of Eid-ul- Fitr.

A senior Army officer said more than 1500 militants, mostly foreigners from different parts of Pakistan and other courtiers, are waiting at different launching pads near the border to sneak into this side before the infiltration routes are closed due to snowfall.

However, he said, troops have already intensified foot and night patrolling with the help of latest sophisticated devices to foil any such attempt.

More than 60 infiltrators were killed after they entered into this side from POK this year.

Earlier, as many as 100 others, including their families, surrendered before troops immediately after they sneaked into this side near the border.
