New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved a Rs 230 crore Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CCS) for marketing and export promotion of handlooms during the Eleventh Plan.
The scheme will have two components, namely, (a) marketing promotion and (b) handloom export promotion.
Briefing newspersons on the outcome of the CCEA meeting, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said Rs 205 crore would be spent on marketing promotion and the balance on handloom export promotion.
Following are the details of the two components: Marketing promotion: (1) organising of exhibitions, events and craft melas (2) setting up Urban Haats (3) setting up of marketing complexes (4) publicity and awareness (5) geographical indications (6) Handloom Marketing Complex, Janpath, New Delhi and (7) handloom mark.
Handloom Export promotion: (1) Export project; (2) International fairs and exhibitions (3) setting up of design studios and (4) miscellaneous promotion events and activities.
Mr Chidambaram said with the assistance under the scheme, it was expected that the marketing promotion component will benefit more than 27 lakh handloom weavers by increasing their sales of handloom products in the domestic market.
Further, the handloom exort promotion component will assist weavers in product diversification and the development of exportable products. It will give them exposure to international markets.
The scheme is to be implemented by the Development Commissioner, Handlooms.
