Rizwanur case:CBI interrogates Ashok Todi,others

Kolkata, Oct 31 (UNI) A day after quizzing two IPS officers, the CBI today interrogated industrialist Ashok Todi, whose daughter's marriage with Rizwanur Rahman led to a family furore ending up in the tragic death of the young computer graphics teacher.

CBI Joint Director Arun Kumar told reporters that Mr Todi, along with his cousin Anil Sarogi and former Ranji cricketer Snehasish Ganguly were being questioned separately to gather more information that led to the unexplained death of Rizwanur.

The CBI has started a case of murder against Ashok Todi, who owns a hosiery goods manufacturing company, in connection with Rizwanur's death.

Mr Todi's daughter Priyanka had married Rizwanur against the wishes of her parents hardly three weeks before the 30-year-old youth was found dead beside the railway tracks at Patipukur on the city's northern fringe.

Elder brother of former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, Snehasish had introduced Mr Todi to the then city Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee when Priyanka's family was making all efforts to separate the couple even after their legal marriage.

While Snehasish is now an office bearer of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Mr Mukherjee holds the post of the President of the organisation.

It was alleged that the Todis made use of police, including former Deputy Commissioners Gyanwant Singh and Ajoy Kumar, to interfere in Rizwanur and Priyanka's marriage. While former DC (Headquarters) Gyanwant Singh referred the matter to his colleague Ajoy Kumar, the then DC DD(I), the latter summoned the couple to the city police headquarters at Lal Bazar on the basis of a complaint of abduction, filed by Mr Todi.

Two other police officers, former Assistant Commissioner(DD) Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das, had allegedly threatened Rizwanur and one of his friends, Sadiq, who happened to be a witness to the marriage.

It was also alleged that Rizwanur's mobile phone was tapped by police.

Besides Mr Singh and Mr Kumar, the two other subordinate police officers were interrogated by CBI sleuths for a long period yesterday to ascertain their exact role in the whole episode.
