Puducherry, Oct 31 (UNI) AICC member from Puducherry V Bhalan today urged the administration to take immediate steps to celebrate Puducherry's 'Independence Day' on November 1 instead of August 16.
Addressing a press conference here, he said though the de-facto merger was effected on October 13, 1954, the transfer of power was effected only on November 1, 1954 and that day must be celebrated as the Independence Day of Union Territory.
He said a high-level committee comprising of political party leaders, researchers, freedom fighters, among others, should be constituted to prepare a report in this regard and it should be made an Act in the legislative assembly. The correct history of Puducherry be included in the school syllabus for the benefit of the younger generation.
Mr Bhalan said he would submit all the documents he had, to prove the true history of the Puducherry to Congress President and AICC Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister among others. He would also hold talks with leaders of several political parties and organise conferences and debates on the issue.
