Cricket board puts off coach selection committee meeting

By Staff

Mumbai, Oct 31 (UNI) Team India's wait for a national coach just got longer with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) putting off its scheduled meeting of the coach selection committee from November 3 to an unspecified date.

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said here that they had to put off the meeting due to the unavailibility of former captain Sunil Gavaskar, who is one of the members of the coach selection commitee.

However, according to sources the real reason for the postponement has been the absence of a suitable candidate from the list of persons who have approached the Board as the prospective national coach.

The source also said that if the Board does not find a suitable coach by the beginning of the Pakistan Test series, then Lalchand Rajput who has been appointed as the Cricket Manager for the one-dayers against Pakistan, would be asked to continue in the same capacity.

Meanwhile, the meeting of the National Cricket Academy will be held as scheduled here on November 3, according to Mr Shah.

''Dav Whatmore has given us a long list (of proposals) and these would be discussed,'' the BCCI secretary said.

Australian Whatmore, a former Test cricketer and ex-coach of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, has taken over as NCA's director of cricket operations.

Ravi Shastri, the new chairman of the Bangalore-based NCA, will also be attending the meeting, Mr Shah added.
