Giridih, Oct 31: The proscribed CPI(Maoist) today owned responsibilty for the recent Chilkhari massacre in which 19 people were killed and said that innocent people were gunned down by mistake.

''Our main target was former Chief Minister's brother Nunulal.

But he escaped from the spot...and by mistake innocent lives were lost,'' a press release issued by the Jharkhand Bihar Regional Committee of CPI(M) said.

Among the dead was Anup, Mr Babulal Marandi's son.

Nunulal was instrumental in formation of Gram Raksha Dal and was also member of Gram Suraksha Samittee, the organisation empowered to fight against ultras in those areas.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General(personnel) and police spokesperson R K Mallick said in the state capital that people behind the incident had been identified.

''Whether the outfit owns responsibility or not does not matter,'' Mr Mullick said.

A case against them had already been registered at Deori police station of Giridih and raids were on to nab them.
