Siliguri, Oct 30 (UNI) The Socialist Unity Centre of India(SUCI) -sponsored 12-hour bandh, called throughout the North Bengal today, hit normal life in the state.
However, the strike was reportedly peaceful.
Six districts, in this part of the state, experienced a black-day today. Private shops, shopping malls, market complexes remained closed. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions were also closed.
Private transporters remained off the roads since the morning.
But government offices and tea gardens were open. Inspector General of Police, North Bengal, R J S Nalwa told UNI that the strike was going on peacefully.
He reported that police would remain alert in all these six districts. Additional forces had been deployed in some sensitive places like Siliguri, Jalpaiguri.
The picketeers tried to stop commuters from boarding onto hired vehicles at the Siliguri Junction. Police, had, however, managed to bring the situation under control. Five picketers had been arrested so far in this connection.
