Cuddalore, Oct 30 (UNI) Power generation in the Public Sector Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), which was restricted to 940 MW following heavy rains, is being stepped up to 1200 MW.

Sources in NLC said after the excavation of coal was hit due to heavy rains, the power generation was restricted to 940 MW against the total capacity of 2,490 MW.

As rains abated in the last two days, mining operation was resumed and excavation of coal had been stepped up from 5,000 tonnes a day to 20,000 tonnes a day.

Thanks to the availability of coal, power generation had also been increased, the sources said. The generation of 1,200 MW was against the normal power generation of 1,800 MW during the monsoon period.

Meanwhile, the district administration was taking all steps to help people in the event of floods. The administration had kept ready 60,000 sand bags to arrest breaches if any in the district.

About 50,000 food packets were distributed to people sheltered in relief centres after they were evacuated from the flooded villages.

Water level in the Veeranam lake was maintained at 44.4 ft against the full capacity of 47.5 ft. The lake received an inflow of 1,100 cusecs and the outflow was 1,677 cusecs, official sources said.
