Mamata gives call to immobilise Bengal

Kolkata, Oct 30(UNI) Demanding Central intervention in the Nandigram unrest and restoration of the 'rule of law', Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today stuck to her decision to observe a 12-hour West Bengal bandh tomorrow.

"Tomorrow everything will be immobilised from dawn-to-dusk. We demand to establish rule of law in Nandigram where a total anarchy is prevailing," she declared addressing a press conference.

Ms.Banerjee said the bandh would be observed also in protest against the corruption in public distribution system, the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman and acquisition of Singur land for the small car project.

"There are CPI(M) atrocities and corruption everywhere in the state while a state-sponsored terrorism is going on in Nandigram. A lawlessness is prevailing there. The Centre must intervene in all these issues," she said.

Accusing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of provoking the trouble in Nandigram, the Trinamool Congress chief alleged that about ten members of Bhumi Uchched Protirodh Committee(BUPC) were injured, two of them seriously, when CPI(M) men fired on a procession in Nandigram during the day.

She said Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee, who was visiting the embattled area, had a narrow escape.

"The Chief Minister himself is giving provocation to foment trouble. He is inept. He should be arrested," she said.

Ms.Banerjee alleged that CPI(M) workers from adjoining Khejuri had been firing at random at Nandigram everyday and police remained onlookers.

Refuting a statement of the Chief Minister, she however, claimed that development work remained unaffected in Nandigram and the overall life was normal."The Chief Minister is lying. From health programmes to food for work and from pulse polio immunisation to providing mid-day meals in schools--everything is going on as usual," she said.

While announcing that the state Government had sought deployment of Central forces in Nandigram, the Chief Minister said yesterday that the continued violence stopped all development work in the area and the amount sanctioned by the Centre had been lying unutilised.

Warning that the administration would be responsible for any trouble tomorrow, Ms.Banerjee claimed that the bandh had been called 'in the interest of peace'.

The programme, to be observed from six am to six pm, would cover everything, except essential services and the information technology sector.UNI KDG-AKM ADG AKP1821
