Giraffe dies of heath complications

Mysore, Oct 30 (UNI) A giraffe died of health complications at the Mysore Zoo here today.

A press note said here today that the 20-year old female giraffe known as 'Honey' which had given birth to a calve, was under a constant medication and died after it developed complications in its health.

The animal, which was brought from Carl Hagenbeck Zoo in 1988, was a captive born and bottle fed after it was rejected by its mother, the statement said.

The statement said that the animal also abandoned its nine calves after giving birth to them at the Zoo over the years.

Honey first gave birth in 1992, and the nineth one recently, it said adding that the five of the calves could not survive due to rejection and also premature birth.

The century old zoo is housing three male giraffes and a new female arrived from Lucknow Zoo, it said.
