New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi today condemned the attack on the convoy of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, terming it ''unfortunate''.

Mr Dasmunsi, in a two-page letter to Home Minister Shivraj Patil, expressed concern about the recent violence and tension in Nandigram.

He said it was unfortunate that once again the situation in Nandigram had become tense.

''I strongly feel that to ensure law and order in Nandigram, the culprits responsible for the massacre should be brought to book immediately, otherwise, the people there will not get consoled.'' The Minister said the attack on Ms Banerjee's convoy was a serious matter and if such incidents were not checked, problems will increase manifold in the state.

Mr Dasmunsi urged the Home Minister to talk to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and take people of the state into confidence, besides seek help of the state machinery to bring the guilty to justice.

The letter pointed out that even the other Left Front partners -- the CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc -- expressed similar views in January, 2007 and March this year.

The letter said in view of the imminent danger to the innocent lives and security of the common man, it was his duty as a Union minister to draw the attention of the Home Minister to the impending dangers to the people of the state.

The Minister said the attack on the Trinamool leader's convoy could have not have taken place, had the culprits of the January and March 14, 2007 incidents been punished and the state government showed a serious approach towards tackling such matters.
