Puducherry, Oct 29 (UNI) Puducherry food cell police yesterday detained a goods train with rice allegedly being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh.
Food cell police sources said here today acting on a tip-off, the team visited the railway station here where the goods train with the rice was stationed and sought the necessary documents for transporting the rice from Puducherry.
The private parties for whom the rice was being supplied, assured the police that the documents would be provided by evening, following which the railway authorities were advised not to allow the train to leave and police personnel were also posted.
However, until noon today no documents were provided, the sources said, adding 600 tonnes of rice was loaded in the train and there was no possibility of such a huge qauantity being purchased from Puducherry.
On suspicion that the rice could be from Tamil Nadu,the concerned wing of the Tamil Nadu police was informed and the case was transferred.
