Chennai, Oct 29 (UNI) Yesterday's depression, which was centred 420 km from the Chennai coast, over the south east bay, moved slightly towards north westwards and weakened into a well marked low pressure area, according to the weather office here today.
A special bullettin issued by the weather office, said that the low pressure area lay over west central and adjoining south west bay off north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
As the weather office had warned that the depression would cross the coast this evening and bring heavy downpour, the Tamil Nadu Government had declared holiday today for all educational institutions and fishermen were adviced not to venture into the sea.
Under the influence of the low pressure area, the State would witness fairly widespread, isolated to heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. The city and its suburbs would generally be cloudy with few spells of thunder showers, the weather office said.
The isolated and very heavy rain, which lashed the city and several parts of Tamil Nadu, during the past 36 hrs, abated this morning bringing a sigh of relief to the people.
People who remained indoors for most of the day yesterday, began their normal life this morning. Several low lying areas in the city were inundated and the Corporation officials were busy draining out the water.
At many places, traffic was hit as still there was knee deep water in the roads.
