Counting for rural polls results begin

Gangtok, Oct 29 (UNI) Fate of the candidates for the 304 Gram Panchayat seats and 46 Zilla Panchayat seats will be decided today when the votes sealed in EVMs will counted and the winners announced.

The EVMs have been put under tight security at the counting centers in each district headquarters after the polls ended on October 26. About 85 per cent voting had been recorded in one of the most peaceful elections ever conducted.

Counting of votes has begun early morning at the counting centers of Gangtok, Mangan, Gyezing and Namchi and results are expected by noon.

Ruling SDF party has already won 66 per cent of the 889 Gram Panchayat seats uncontested and another 46 Zilla seats out of 93 seats uncontested. Elections for one Zilla Panchayat seat of Navey Sothak will be held in November.

Meanwhile, State Election Commission (SEC) has authorised the DCs of each district as presiding officers in their respective districts for administrating the oath of affirmation in accordance with Section 104 of Sikkim Panchayat Act, 1997.

The DCs will be presiding over the meetings of the Gram Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats and election of Sabhapati, Upa-Sabhapati and Sachiva of Gram Panchayats on November 6 and Adhyaksha and Upa Adhyaksha of Zilla Panchayats on November 5.
