New Delhi, Oct 29: A number of eminent persons, activists, educationists and people from all walks of life today called for cancellation of the elections to the Gujarat Assembly, scheduled in December, and immediate dismissal of the Narendra Modi government in the wake of the Tehelka expose on the 2002 communal riots.
In a petition, they urged the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice and the Election Commission to constitute a CBI probe into the revelations and ensure the immediate arrest of those who had openly confessed to their crimes.
''The Tehelka tapes present incontestable evidence of the involvement of the state machinery in the Gujarat pogrom. The Chief Minister, Home Minister and their own administration planned, provoked and encauraged the massacre of Muslims,'' they said.
They demanded that the RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena be declared unlawful organisations and a high-level enquiry ordered into the ''claims of their top leaders'' about their involvement in rapes, looting and making of bombs.
They also urged the Government to sign the Genocide convention and that Chief Minister Modi be tried by a tribunal. They sought reinvestigation into the Nanded bomb blast case where activists have pointed to the involvement of the RSS.
Among the signitories are danseuses Aditi Mangaldas and Mallika Sarabhai, actor Nandita Das, Chitra Subramanium, eminent lawyer Kamini Jaiswal and activist Shabnam Hashmi.
