Port Blair, Oct 29 (UNI) The administration today refuted reports that more than 12 people have died of Leptospirosis in North Andaman and Nicobar islands, saying the situation is under control.
''There were unconfirmed reports of a few deaths due to the disease, known as Andaman fever, but officially there was only one death,'' Andaman Health Department N Sadasivan told UNI here today adding that the situation was under control.
However, the Directorate of Health Services have sent a team of specialists to the remote islands to take the stock of the situation.The team comprising doctors from Andaman Health Department and scientists from Indian Council of Medical Research visited and examined the patients in the affected areas.
The team had also conducted awareness programme at PHC Tugapur in the remote villages.
Meanwhile, Andaman's lone MP Manoranjan Bhakta visited PHC Tugapur to console the bereaved families.
Andaman Fever, which is a common disease in these islands, is reported during November and December every year.
