Kottayam, Oct 28 (UNI) LDF Convenor Vaikom Viswam today charged that former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and other UDF leaders were 'trying to protect' the ABVP-RSS cadre, the 'accused' in the murder of an assistant sub-inspector of police during a campus clash on October 26.
At a newsconference here, Mr Viswam alleged that the Congress was supporting the communal and anti-social elements as part of the 'unholy nexus' between the party and the BJP and with an eye on the next election.
Though, police had arrested the accused immediately after the death of Changanassery ASI M C Alias (47), the UDF and BJP leaders, including O Rajagopal were trying to justify the accused. Police personnel, who were eyewitnesses, had only arrested the accused, he contended.
Meanwhile, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Secretary P Sandeep said that in protest against the 'arrest and torturing' of the 'innocent' ABVP activists in connection with the officer's death and demanding stern action against the police officers, an education bandh was called in the district tomorrow.
