Visakhapatnam, Oct 28 (UNI) Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International General Secretary Praveen Togadia today alleged that there was an 'international conspiracy' behind India not becoming self-sufficient in its energy requirements by tapping its vast thorium reserves in the southern coasts.

Addressing a public meeting here as part of his two-day tour of north coastal Andhra Pradesh, organised by the Rameswaram Rama Sethu Samrakshana Vedika, to mobilise support against the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project, Togadia questioned the cost-effectiveness of the project.

The maintenance of the channel would be more expensive in due course than the profits foreseen, he added.

The aggressive sea currents in Bay of Bengal would soon disturb the fish habitats on the other side of the Ram Sethu once the project was in place and washout Thorium deposits.

''India can become world leader in the energy generation, if the Thorium reserves are utilised. The country can avoid dependence on external Uranium supplies, '' he noted.
