Chennai, Oct 28 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor S S Barnala said ''Indian Noni'', popularly known as ''Indian Mulberry'', possessed over 150 health promoting nutrients and exhorted people to utilise the potential and divine power of the herbal plant to lead a healthy life without medication.
Inaugurating the second national symposium on ''Noni for Health and Wellness'', the Governor yesterday said the Noni possessed over 150 health promoting nutrients, 17 of the 20 essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and the much required anti-oxidants.
The whole plant, right from its roots, stem, leaves and fruits were used for therapeutic effect,'' he said adding the fruits particularly had wide range of therapeutic potential and were used as anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-tumor, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and for immune exchange effects.
The Governor said he was happy to learn that the European Union had accepted Noni juice as a novel food.
Commercial interest for the plant had increased greatly in recent years and it was learnt that there were 19 patents registered in the US Patent and Trade Mark office alone, since 1976.
''However, in India we are not much aware of its potential and its divine power to result in healthy life without medication. Noni is described as God's gift for a healthy and well cared human body,'' the Governor said.
He said, ''we may boast that Charaka and Susrutha were born in India and India is the home of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems of practice. But what we need is an individual approach by everyone to healthcare.'' The Governor congratulated the World Noni Research Foundation and the Health India Laboratories for their valid efforts in creating awareness on the uses of Noni.
