Punjab Police and Sikkim Police move to pre-quarter finals

Gangtok, Oct 28 (UNI) The Punjab Police today defeated the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) by a solitary goal to move into the pre-quarter final stage of the 29th All India Governor's Gold Cup at the Paljor Stadium here.

Gurpreet Singh scored the winning goal for Punjab Police in the ninth minute with a rasping drive from outside the box.

Although ASEB players dominated the proceedings, they could not find the net and failed to target the ball to the goalpost on one occasion.

Punjab Police take on Chittagaon Abahoni from Bangladesh in their next outing on October 30.

Earlier, the home team Sikkim Police trashed the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council team 4-1 to storm into the pre-quarter final stage.

Lok Bahadur Lamichaney scored a brace for Sikkim Police in the seventh and 71st minute while his teammate Sushil Karthak pumped in the third goal. The fourth goal was a suicide goal by the Darjeeling team.

Lakpa Lepcha scored the consolation goal for the Darjeeling team in the 38th minute with a header.

Sikkim Police now faces a strong challenge from the Nigerian Eagles, an all Nigerian team, cobbled from Nigerian players playing in different clubs of India.
