Paddy procurement crosses 105 lakh tonnes mark in Punjab

Chandigarh, Oct 28 (UNI) Government agencies and private millers procured more than 105 lakh tonnes of paddy in Punjab till last evening.

According to an official spokesman, out of the total procurement of 105.52 lakh tonnes of Paddy in all the procurement centers of the state, government agencies had procured 86.26 lakh tonnes of paddy, which was 81.7 per cent, till date whereas millers had lifted 19.25 lakh tonnes(18.3 %) of paddy.

Till yesterday, Pungrain had procured 21.69 lakh tonnes (25.1%) whereas Markfed procured 20.47 lakh tonnes (23.7%).

Punsup procured 21.97 lakh tonnes (25.5%), PSWC procured 11.65 lakh tonnes (13.5%) whereas PAIC was able to procure 9.38 lakh tonnes (10.9 %) of paddy.The Central government agency FCI had been able to procure 1.09 lakh tonnes (1.3%).

The spokesman said that Ludhiana district with 13.49 lakh tonnes of procurement was leading in procurement operations whereas Sangrur district with 11.87 lakh tonnes of procurement was at second slot and Ferozepur district with 11.43 lakh tonnes of procurement ranked at third position.

The spokesman added that the Punjab government had already made payment to the tune of Rs 5250.41 crore for paddy procured till October 26. Rs 5898.93 crore payments had been allocated to all agencies to ensure timely payment to the farmers. The government had already issued instructions to make payment to the farmers within 72 hours of lifting paddy.

The spokesman said that to ensure smooth procurement and timely payments to the farmers, the state government had already got a cash credit limit of Rs 7439 crores sanctioned from Reserve Bank of India for Kharif Season 2007-08.
