Madurai, Oct 28 (UNI) With Deepavali round the corner, it is a quick-buck time for some householders in Sivakasi area, who earn a daily income of Rs 15 upto lakh, through illegal manufacture and sale of fire crackers, collectively.
Unlicensed crackers are being manufactured at many houses in Vijayakarisalkulam, Vettrilayoorni and Thayilpatti areas, police said.
Following a complaint from the licensed manufactures against the spiralling growth of unlicensed cracker manufacturing, which eat into their pie, a local court here directed the District Collector to keep a tab on illegal manufacturers.
A flying squad, constituted by the Virudhunagar District Administration, have seized crackers worth Rs one lakh recently.
Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer Ganesan said the District Collector had constituted four teams to check and prevent illicit 'business'.
The licensed manufacturing units, unable to meet the growing demand for crackers in the season, had engaged outsiders. The explosive materials thus obtained were misused by the illegal manufacturers, police said.
The illegal manufacturing had also caused a drain of workers from the authorised units, which now face a shortage of labour, Srinivasan, a licensed manufacturer said.
