By Staff

Mehsana, Gujarat, Oct 28 (UNI) A half-marathon will be held in Mehsana on December 23 as part of 'save girl child' drive in Gujarat.

''The marathon has a special significance as the birth rate of the female child is considerably low. This event will be first of its kind that will begin from Mehsana and end at Unjha, which has the lowest female rate of 742 as against that of male (888 per 1000) births,'' marathon organizing chairman Dr Mukesh Chaudhari told UNI.

''The participation has been divided into four categories and five km distance has been fixed for the children and those above sixty years of age. The third category (11 km) has no age limit, while the fourth one is the longest (21.097 km) will include those above 18 years of age,'' said Mr Chaudhari.

''First category will take off from Taleti bus stand and will end at Soneripura Bus stand towards Unjha. Second 111 km marathon will end at Binani Stand, while forth category of 21.097 km will begin from Ramosna circle and will terminate at Unzha circle,'' he said.

''It is the first of its kind in the state, formerly such marathons were held at Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi,'' he added.

The sponsors for the event include Friends Sports Club of India Mehsana, Youth Hostel Association of India, Mehsana Unit and Sports Federation of Indian Medical Association, Mehsana.
