Jalandhar, Oct 28 (UNI) Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mumbai prevailed over Punjab National Bank, Delhi 2-1 in a pool D match in the 24th IndianOil All India Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.
This match was played for 15 minutes last night before a technical fault developed in the newly installed stood lights.
Bharat Petroleum were then leading 1-0, through a goal by Hari Parsad.
When the match resumed today, the petroleum men converted the penalty corner awarded yesterday. Gurpreet Singh made no mistake to increase the lead (2-0). Two goals down, the Punjab National Bank mounted pressure and made some dangerous moves but BPCL goalkeeper Ajay Kumar Saroha made three excellent saves. However, the bankmen were able to reduce the margin in the 20th minute when Gagandeep Singh scored a field goal (1-2).
Punjab National Bank wasted an opportunity to equalise when Rajwinder's shot from close range was brlliantly saved by goalkeeper Ajay Kumar Saroha. There was no scoring in the second half despite both the teams launching attacks and counter-attacks.
Bharat Petroleum have so far earned three points from one match while Punjab National Bank have two points.
Earlier, Namdhari XI, Sirsa and Punjab National Bank, Delhi had played a 3-3 draw to split points in their earlier match.
Scoring three goals in each half, Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar defeated Jarkharh Hockey Academy, Jarkharh (Ludhaina) by 6-0 in a pool A match for juniors.
The winners shot ahead in the sixth minute when outside right Hardeep Singh scored a fine field goal after getting pass from their inside right just on the top of the striking circle (1-0).
Seven minutes later, the Jalandhar lads earned first penalty corner.Full Back Jagroop Singh sounded the board. The Jalandhar boys converted their second penalty corner through Jaswinder Singh (Sr) in the 28th minute. On resumption Manjinder Singh (38th), centre forward Sukhdeep Singh (54th) and Karanveer (58th, penalty corner) scored one goal each to swell the winners' kitty.
