Ranchi, Oct 27 (UNI) Condemning today's Maoist attack which claimed 18 lives, including that of the son of former chief minister Babulal Marandi, former Union Minister Sibu Soren asked the state government to take strong measures to check extremism.

Before leaving for the site of incident the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha president told reporters here the state government should make strong rules and take the help of local people to check the menace.

''Local people in the rural areas can provide information to police which can be helpful for the forces,'' Mr Soren observed.

Accusing the erstwhile NDA government for the present scenario of extremism in the state, Mr Soren said, ''this is not the first time that ultras have targeted common people. Earlier, the situation was more complicated''.
