New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal today called upon the UNESCO members to make generic technologies affordable to large segments of the global community in areas of solid waste management, safe drinking water, clean coal, solar power and disaster management.
''Conscious efforts should be made to render technologies affordable to many through North- South and South-South technology partnerships,'' he said, presiding over the ministerial round table of member countries of UNESCO in Paris.
While the needy should be offered free access, a formula of differential prices based on capacity to pay should be worked out for others, he said, according to an official release issued here.
Calling for innovative ways to bridge the differences between science and industry through public-private partnerships, Mr Sibal said greater interactions should take place among the four pillars of development-- industry, government, research and academy.
He also emphasised the need for giving greater autonomy to the university systems in the developing world.
