Madurai Oct 27 (UNI) MDMK Propaganda Secretary Nanjil Sampath, who was allegedly attacked inside the central prison here, was ordered to be transferred to the sub-jail by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court yesterday.

Mr Sampath had been remanded in custody after he was arrested on charges of making derogatory remarks against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister during a public meeting.

He was allegedly roughed up by some inmates accused in the 'Dinakaran' Attack Case.' Following this, MDMK Lawyer Subburaj submitted a petition to the Registrar of the Bench V Mohandas to inquire into the case as matter of urgency.

The petition came up before a Division Bench comprising Justices F M Ibrahim Khalifulla and S Palanivelu.

The petitioner said a habeas corpus petition seeking to protect Mr Sampath was coming up for hearing on Monday.

Mr Sampath's bail application was also coming up before the Batalagundu Judicial Magistrate Court. Since the intervening two days were holidays, it was not safe to detain him at the central prison.

The judges then ordered Mr Sampath to be detained in a safe place. The situation would deteriorate if he was detained in the same prison and therefore, he should be shifted to the sub-jail, adjacent to the prison, they said.

The government pleader was directed to convey appropriate orders to the superintendent of prison and inform the registrar on the action taken.
